About Trees For Life
'In few places do the dictates of modern environmentalism butt so painfully against economic reality as they do in Malawi.' – Michael Wines, NY Times
Right now, deforestation is devastating the rural communities of northern Malawi causing floods, displacement, and soil erosion. This also leads to poverty and hunger. Every year, over 120,000 hectares of forest are lost to logging, industry and small-scale farming. The villagers are also cutting down trees to fuel their cooking. Sadly, most people are unaware of how important the trees are.
In 2011, Temwa launched the ‘Trees for Life’ campaign to address this problem and it has been a great success. We raised £18,000.00 which enabled us to grow and plant 200,000 trees in the region just before the rainy season started. We have also expanded our efforts to educate the communities about the care and importance of trees.
But there are still lots of communities that we need to educate about the negative effects of deforestation and we must continue to plant more trees. So we have decided to continue running this campaign throughout 2012.
There are many ways to support this effort to bring an end to deforestation in Malawi.
The simplest way to help is to donate to the campaign, and 100% of your donation will go directly to Malawi. Groups of families and friends can get together to raise funds through community events or direct donations with the Family Tree Appeal. Businesses interested in demonstrating their commitment to the environment and charitable giving can get involved through our corporate giving appeal.
