|
The purpose of this session is to raise awareness of 'World AIDS day' on the 1st December 2011.
Both international development charities – Temwa and African Initiatives – have set up projects that are helping to prevent the spread of HIV in Malawi, Ghana and Tanzania.
There will be introductions from Jo Hook (the Director and Co-founder of Temwa) and Christine Whinney (the Overseas Programme Officer for African Initiatives). Both will speak about their organisations and the work they do on their HIV/AIDs projects. Ivan Lewis will also be speaking about the importance of the continued battle against HIV/AIDS, and his vision for international development. Afterwards, there will be an informal Q&A session where the audience will have the opportunity to address the three speakers on the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS and international development generally. This event is open to the general public. Time: 5pm Venue: Conference room, Brunswick Court, Brunswick Square, Bristol BS2 8PE
About Temwa Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, with 73% of the population living on less than £1 per day. It also has one of the highest national HIV prevalence rates in the world. Temwa's objective is to help build a sustainable future for the people of Malawi through community-based projects in health education, sustainable agriculture, schools support and skills training. About Ivan Lewis In October 2011 Ed Miliband appointed Ivan as Shadow Secretary of State for International Development. During Ivan's period as a DfID Minister for Africa between 2008 and 2009, he worked to secure global support for an intensive focus on maternal health. Ivan led DfID on how the UK could work more effectively with other donors and multilateral organisations to make a sustainable difference in fragile states. |
