An overwhelming amount of textbook donations poured in from individuals, teachers and schools within the Santa Barbara, Goleta and Carpentaria districts of California. Mark Williams, founder, promoter and project manager for utu explains how the book rally came about following a conversation at a book club meeting concerning the changing of textbooks.
“The books being replaced (in schools) have no place to go; what a waste of resources, so a container was donated, volunteers rallied and the loading started” The organisation carried out a similar project in 2008 collecting a total of 18,000 textbooks that were used in 57 rural schools in Kenya. “I will never forget the look in a child’s face opening a book or the tears of joy from a teacher”, Mark recalls. Once distributed, these books will provide much needed learning resources for pupils and teachers and as Mark explains, “open doors and a whole new world” for the people of Malawi. Temwa would like to express its gratitude to all those who donated textbooks to the project and everyone who helped organize and load the 20, 000lbs worth of textbooks into the storage container. It’s such an honour to work alongside the utu organization and to be able to invest in educational community projects such as these.
