New Programme Manager in Malawi Print

tonderai-smallTemwa has recently appointed a new Programme Manager in Malawi. Tonderai Manoto took up the position at the start of December after an induction with UK Manager, Joanna Hook. Tonderai will be responsible for the overall running of Temwa in Malawi as well as being the driving force behind Temwa's expansion and future direction of our projects. All the staff in Malawi and UK are excited to have Tonderai as an integral part of the team. His fantastic array of skills and experience compliment Temwa's outlook and objectives perfectly and he has expressed how happy he is to have gained the position.

After restructuring the Malawi side of the organisation earlier this year and creating the position of Programme Manager, we recruited Amos Zaindi into the position in June. However, shortly after taking up the position, Amos handed in his resignation due to have being offered a funded Post Graduate course that he couldn't turn down. This was a bit of a blow for Temwa after such a long recruitment process, however, after going through the process again we are extremely happy to have found Tonderai.

Tonderai Manoto's experience is wide reaching. He began his working career as an A Level Commerce teacher in his home country of Zimbabwe. Tonderai then moved into the development sector in Zimbabwe and worked researching and setting up microfinance projects before working as a Senior Business Analyst and later a Training and Development Manager for ENDA, an NGO that facilitates development and wealth creation through agriculture, training and resource conservation. After a brief stint as a Consultant for Prince Waterhouse Coopers evaluating agribusiness volunteer programs in Zimbabwe, he then worked for many years for the LEAD Program until his last held position before joining Temwa. The LEAD Program is a USAID funded program meant to increase income and food security for rural disadvantaged households with special focus on the HIV/AIDS affected. Tonderai's many roles in his various positions included managing projects linking farmers to markets, managing grants from international NGOs and managing relief and recovery operations for drought stricken households involving drip irrigation kits. After founding and becoming the Operations Director of the LEAD Trust, Tonderai then worked as a consultant and specialist on other USAID drip irrigation and natural resource based enterprise projects in Malawi while also setting up the LEAD Trust in Malawi.

During the recruitment process, Tonderai's experience was unparalleled and it soon became very clear that he was the ideal candidate for the position. Temwa would like to formally welcome Tonderai to the team and express how much we are looking forward to working with him over the coming years. Tonderai is the ideal person to help us drive Temwa forward as an organisation and we are excited to see Temwa's essential work in Malawi grow and develop under his future management.

Congrats Tonderai. We need educated and courageous Africans like you. Study Temwa and hear what the beneficiaries very careful. You are my fellow African and i hope you will be able to assist the poor Malawians of Usisya. Temwa is one of the very good and unique initiatives in Malawi. Support the founders and advise them accordingly.

Warning!
In Malawi, because of the previous government policies, Many poor communities have developed dependency syndrome as well as free resources from project implementators. It is not everybody but some few individual beneficiaries who sometimes are very influencial to others. Screen out these people as they may affect your performance. I like Temwa very well. I work for JICA Malawi and i do have so many volunteers in Nkhata-Bay whom i am supervising.

Suggestion!
I would suggest that you try to facilitate the establishment of strong community owned institutions e.g village loan saving groups as well farmers' associations and cooperatives within Usisya so that they request genuine issues from Temwa in a democratic way rather than just from few influencial individuals. Let me know if you are stuck in any of the projects. I will sacrifice my time to advise accordingly. You have a very energetic and supportive team from Temwa UK.If these community owned institutions are strengthened, they will be very influencial even to Nkhata-Bay District Assembly. They will be able to access funds and other resources from the assembly on their own hence more sustainable. You will later be able to move to other new areas of your interest.

I would be very glad to see Temwa become the best NGO in Malawi as it carries a local name despite being initiated by foreigners.

Yours
Raymond Mwenitete-Programme Officer, JICA Malawi.

Raymond

Thank you for your insightful comments.

You and I need to meet and discuss Usisya, Beekeeping and the general development of Malawi. Would you care to do this as JICA?
